Plains is the main characteristic of Municipality of Aigio, the second Municipality at Achaia’s region, which capital, Aigio is an ideal place for tourist excursions to Delphi, Korinthos, Argolida and Roumeli.
Municipality of Aigio consists of the following departments: Aigion, Valimitika, Dafnes, Digeliotika, Kouloura, Koumari, Kouninas, Melissia, Paraskeyi, Pteri, Selinountas, Temeni and Hadgi.
The modern town of Aigio is built amphitheatrically with a unique view toward Korinthiakos Gulf, at the same position as its Homeric ancestor. Archaeological excavations have brought to light many pieces from Mycenaean burial grounds and other findings from classical Era as well.
Natural border of the area are the foothills of Helmos and Panachaikos Mountains as well as Selinountas and Meganitis Rivers.
The architectural scenery of Aigio has got a special jewel: The Holy Temple of Panagia Tripiti and other Churches as well such as the one of Faneromeni and of Theotoko’s Eisodia, designed by Ernest Tchiller, who has signed many buildings in Achaia. Ipsila Alonia square offers panoramic view to Mainland and is a meeting point especially during summer months, with its numerous trendy crowded cafes. At the port of Aigio there is the famous plane tree of Paysanias and the 12 taps generously offering their freshness.
In Taxiarhes Monastery, 15 klm far from Aigio, monks produce rose-jam, the special product of Aigialeia, and the biotope of Alyki at the eastern coast of Aigio is a real shelter to wild birds and visitors as well!
In Kounina you will see the historical Monastery Kimiseos tis Theotokou and in Degeliotika and Temeni you will enjoy nature’s beauties offering smells from lemon and orange trees and shadows from olive trees as well as endless picturesque beaches.
Tourism is important to the whole Municipality, which has significantly grown when it comes to tourist settlements and substructures.
