Municipality of Patras suspends its fate, economy, culture and strategic upon constant communication with the West, for centuries, through sea port of Patras.

Today, the municipality of Patras consists of the following Departments: Patra, Elekystra, Mira and Souli. It is the biggest Municipality of the Region, as it includes the capital of Achaia, Patras, which is a financial, administrative and cultural centre of the area.
The only flat Department is the one of Patras, while the rest are quite mountaineer.

Patras is built on Panachaiko’s Mountain foothills and it situated at the centre of 4 major Archaeological Sites: Ancient Olympia, Delphi, Epidaurus and Mycenae. Patra’s port is Greece’s gate to the West and one of the major ports of Mediterreanean Sea.

Castle

There is a great deal of sightseeing in Patras: The Roman Odeon (160 A.D.), situated at Saint George’s Square and hosts culture shows, and the Castle, which is the pre-historic citadel and contains some architectural elements from antiquity to nowadays. Furthermore, the Holy Temple of Agios Andreas (S. Andrew) is one of the most impressive and awesome churches of Greece and the biggest in Balcans, the Georgiou A’ square with the neoclassical buildings around, such as the Public Theatre "Appolo", built by Tchiller (1871), the neoclassic building "Hermes", of Patra’s Commercial union (Tchiller’s work as well) and the magnificent building of National Bank.

Lighthouse

In Patras, you can enjoy your coffee with view, either at the Public Tourist Pavilion at Dasyllio, which offers panoramic view of the city, or in marina, by the sea, where you can walk by moonlight.

At coastal zone of Patras, you will meet Faros (Lighthouse), the city’s trademark, which was re-built and placed a bit further from its initial place. Don’t forget to walk up to Trion Nayarhon Square, with its pavements, the sour orange trees, and the various restaurants and cafes. You shouldn’t also miss Ipsila Alonia Square, with the terrific view.

Commercial / shopping centre of Patras (Agiou Nikolaou, Maizonos, Korinthou, Kolokotroni, Ermou etc) can offer you everything. Don’t forget, as you are leaving the city, to take some traditional local products with you: ouzo, tendoura, Turkish delights (loukoumia) and wines….the queen of which is certainly Mayrodafni.
